"Looking Backwards To Move On"

I Am Kloot - 'Northern Skies' - A beautiful song by Manchester based trio. We have seen them several times in recent years - the most memorable was when they headlined the Deershed festival in 2011 as the summer sun set over Baldersby Park near Thirsk.

I had previously accosted John Branwell, the lead singer, on his way to the beer tent and he serenaded my then 5 year old daughter with the opening lines of this lovely song.

Baldersby Park, Thirsk - close to England's fastest flowing river, the River Swale

We have tickets for this years festival and the headliners are James, my favourite band in the whole wide world.

In addition to the James indie staple of the 90's 'Sit Down', more recently they wrote the tender, tear inducing 'Moving On', which was inspired by both the death of Tim Booth's (vocalist) mum and a close friend - a dance teacher, in 2012.

The award winning video helped me explain my own mums passing to my kids.

Life eh?

Songs help tremendously....

It's 30 years since my first trip to Club La Santa in north west Lanzarote. There's nowhere quite like it and it's the perfect place for people like me who enjoy active holidays.

Many things have changed over the years, but the 15 minute workout at 8 am every morning (referred to as 'Morning Gymnastics') remains the same. The same exercises to the same playlist, every day, year after year. Always popular and no one ever seems to tire of it.

There's some great tunes on that playlist, but it's Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World' which gathers people together to participate in this 37 year old tradition.

Whenever I hear that song, I'm taken back to that special place of well-being; heading off to start the day under a bright blue sky, the volcanic landscape in the distance, with a breeze from the Atlantic Ocean gently blowing through the palm trees in the early morning sunshine.

My pick would be 'Waterloo Sunset' by The Kinks. It takes me back to warm/balmy summer evenings staying with my dad's parents in south London.

'9 Feet Underground' or 'Nigel Blows A Tune' by Caravan always takes me to summer term in 1st year hall of residence. It is however 22 minutes long and mostly instrumental so I wouldn't suggest it.....

If on the other hand, if you have 22 minutes and 40 seconds to spare, and fancy travelling back to the early '70's, here's the link
